    I just wanted to share a suggestion for printing. As a small business owner, we purchased a nicer printer for about $150, and have found it to be grossly helpful for homeschooling. I can print 150 pages in color for about $15, including the ink and paper. Our local UPS store can bind that with a clear cover sheet for about $8. It's been a good economical option for us!

    Just for fun, I counted 55 sums of digit pairs using 0 to 9. 10+9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1= 55 see the discussion around the 15 minutes time stamp. Also, I love Leigh's comment that 0 and 1 are the best numbers ever!

    We have been in CC for 5 years and my son will be in Challenge A, he is not "at grade level" for math, and the majority of his peers from our campus are not either (although they are many levels "ahead" in other subjects) I asked at Practicum, but didn't receive a clear answer on how these kids are supposed to ever 'catch up" when thrown into Math Maps in Challenge A, which seems to be "on grade level." I inquired if there is access to lower levels of math maps to work in for kids who are not at grade level & was told no, they would work at the Challenge A level & to trust the process, that thru copy work & flash cards eventually it would click. I would like to know how you see this working for kids who are behind grade level in math? We are currently doing math tutoring 2 times per week, to fill in gaps and are happy with the curriculum we have been using. I can't really fathom doubling our work in math by adding math maps to what we are currently doing in math (which is working well for my son, to increase proficiency and confidence, and I am very reluctant to abandon) We are very excited for Challenge A, but the math maps has kind of thrown us for a loop. What is your advice for parents of kids going into A who are behind in math, and how did you plan for this in the design of the program? I am curious why the choice was made to begin the Math Map program in Challenge A, as opposed to introducing it/ adding it into Foundations first, so kids could have the advantage of beginning with this math curriculum from the start? I know there has never been a required math curriculum for F & E, but why not change that & start everyone from the ground up?

      TMM was created for the Challenge program to bring math unity to the entire program. The logic strand where math is discussed on community day has been less than fruitful because every student is working at a different math level and in a different program. TMM will allow the Challenge director to have a common conversation with all students because everyone is using the same materials at the same time. There is no plan to integrate TMM into foundations. We have always said that F/E is a full curriculum expect you need your own math and reading. Well, now we have a math program to offer.

    The Everyday Educator podcast episode on this book was so interesting. I came here to learn more about this book and I’m excited to plan in stories to my Cycle 1 plans- especially around the week we do the spider web science experiment.

    My son is a part of the internship program and it has been wonderful year of growth for him. He's one of the ones that Andy mentioned had just arrived. This summer he is one of the guides and this fall he is staying as a maintenance fellow. My younger son also just completed his Cornerstone summer and is hoping to return next summer.

    You mentioned this was an older version of Naturals and fractions. If we plan to download them for our younger students, is there a way that we will know if they get updated? I don't want to download them and then go to work with her children and realize that they're an outdated version.

    9:40 - 10:15 Explanation of context for frame pages for both non-mathematician moms and mathematician moms. 12:45 - 15:20 How to tailor The Math Map 39:30 - 40:35 Why The Math Map was made consumable and provide maximum flexibility and options for family use. 41:30 - 42:13 The hardest lessons are 11, 18, and 7. The Math Map was designed to have weeks that are times of wrestling followed by weeks that are restful. If it seems difficult, keep going, there will be times that are more restful.

    Will the lesson extensions and games be the same through all the digital levels? If we have children we will be doing the different digital level which level games would you recommend? I am so excited to go through the math map with my kids as we prepare for challenge for our littles in the next couple of years.

      The Naturals will give you a much more simplified version of the concept that is being studied in Complex. Naturally younger kids will have more information on their worksheet pages which you can use to further give context to the work in Complex.

    Thank you so much for making this video. I have had the scribblers books since last year and only used at a time or two because I felt overwhelmed at the time with my daughter, starting challenge A. I’m actually really excited about using this this upcoming summer and year. This summer I have been looking for things that can be done together as a family as my older daughter is now in Challenge B and during the school year often has a lot of work to be done. Over the summer will be able to do some of these activities and my hope is to carry the practice into the school year as well. Also, my son is technically old enough to go into Essentials, but I know that he is not ready. But I am really excited about this book because of the tools that I can use to start preparing him to start essentials the following year. I also love the five verbs that Lisa mentioned. I wish I had known them sooner but I’m so glad that I know them now! Thank you for making these videos. I have been taking advantage of the math map club videos, which are amazing, but now I see there’s a whole wealth of videos to learn from. I’ve already watched three in the past two days!! Thank you!!

How remarkable is the orderliness of the order of operations. :) Before I started CC, I used to say "I hate math- I never understood numbers- I'm a reader and a writer...."     Each week I have been taking y’all along on my math map journey. Y’all have helped me understand each week to a greater degree than I ever would’ve discovered on my own. I look forward to the videos each week and I look forward to the next videos!! Thank you for helping equip us to understand math in a totally different way in a way that approachable, usable, applicable, wonderful, beautiful. My family and I are really enjoying mass map and we are looking forward to the years to come.

    Leigh, I loved this! I feel so much smarter. :) My favorite part was the Zoom mom with the sleeping baby. I'm thankful you have broken down these concepts and made it possible for normal, busy moms like me to "see the unseen." It equips us to equip our children.

    Did anyone come up with an idea for two lines in the same space? I guess it’s worth a shot to try yarn through a straw? Though that might lend more towards two line segments in the same space and technically would be 3-D

      My understanding is last year's book club (2023) focused primarily on the Artwork and Exhordium pages, but this year's club (2024) is honing in on the actual lesson pages. I have found the 2024 videos more helpful as a parent and Challenge A director.

    Hi Leigh! First off, thank you for all your hard work with CC! My kiddo is THRIVING because of the dedication you and many other put into this program. I do have a question, only because we are on week 21. Do you ever question the moon landing? The Bible clearly states there is a firmament above the Earth. I'm sure it's a slippery slope, especially being responsible for providing education resources. (If it's talked about in challenge, I wouldn't know. As we are only in our first year of Essentials and third year in Foundations)

    Once I learned that my rising Challenge A student will be using The Math Map, I jumped in and listened to all 30 weekly videos. These videos have been so encouraging and have inspired me to approach math differently with my son for the remainder of the school year. We are so excited for the Math Map!

    Is there any chance we can get a short with Dr. Gilpin's speech and Leigh's addition at the end (roughly minute 52:00- 56:20)? In listening to my community's concerns about having a required math curriculum, I think this can help explain why and address some of the fears about "what if my student isn't that far?"

    We have educated our four kids through CC for the last 10 years; and have only one left to graduate. What we have given them are lifelong skills - to learn anything - should they choose to hold on to them. I know that in the process I have grabbed hold of these lost tools, these lost skills and am a changed person (for the better). It's amazing what life is it like outside of the slave system.

    I think when you explain "base n" to people who have never worked with bases before, you have to do more preliminary work with them to help them understand that, for example, a "4" is a symbol for a quanitity, and the symbol, "4," is not the quantity itself. We use the symbol "4" for this quantity, but it could be assigned a different symbol, such as *. If that were so, counting (in base 10) would be written: 1, 2, 3, *, 5, 6, 7.... etc. Once people start to disconnect the symbol "4" from the quantity of four, they are better able to understand how the quantity 4 could be represented by different symbols. Then you can introduce the idea that a quantity of four can be symbolized by more than a single *. Remind students that the quantity ten is symbolized by "10," which is technically TWO familiar symbols, instead of assigning the quantity ten to a new symbol, such as &. Once that idea is forefront, I think you can move on to place value, as Kirsty did here. I just think people automatically associate a certain quantity with a specific symbol (be it 4, 44, 404, etc) so strongly that they have conflated the two things. Don't know if I've helped anyone at all here. Gonna try it with my Challenge II students in the fall.
